Sam Morrow On the Hill Session at Kettle Pot Tracks
Sam came to see us at the end of the summer. It was a beautiful sunny day fully of equally-beautiful (though sometimes less-sunny) music. We really enjoyed our afternoon with Sam, and we’re sure you’ll enjoy your whatever time it is right now…
So… When/why/how/where did Sam Morrow (the musician) get started? That is to say, can you give us a comfortably-abridged bio?
I originally began playing music in churches, being from the south that was pretty normal. I learned a lot about theory and playing with others from that. I sort of attribute whatever soul I do have in my music to playing in churches and seeing people really connect over a song. I strayed away from the church awhile back but music remained really the one constant in my life and still remains that way today. About 5 years ago I got sober and that’s when I really dove head first into writing songs. I became a huge fan of just honest, gritty songwriting. In some respects, songwriting saved my life. It forced me to be honest and free flowing and spontaneous. I found that the songwriting where most honesty lies is in Americana/Folk/Country kind of stuff. So naturally I gravitated in that direction. And the rest is history HA. Ive recorded two full lengths since then and have done quite a bit of touring. I’m constantly writing and in the past five years I’ve not only learned a lot about myself as an artist , but music has taught me a lot about who I am as a person as well.
Why did you choose these songs for On the Hill?
At the time I think I chose those songs just because they were heavy on my mind. I had just recorded them and released that record and was touring the northeast. These were the tunes I most related to at the time and were the most fun to play.
What else is going on in your world? What’s next?
I plan to start tracking another record later this year, I already have a bunch of songs for it but its just a matter of weeding out the not so good ones and gaining a little bit more direction for the record. In the meantime I have a lot of touring going on this year. Ill be doing three weeks in the southwest in March and I’m going to the UK in the summertime. I’m sure more stuff will come to fruition later in the year as well, we will see where the road takes us.
