Carol Cleveland Sings On the Hill Session
We super-duper love Gretchen and Thomas. From the moment we met them three-ish years ago, we were sure they were two very special people. Carol Cleveland Sings showcases Thomas’s songwriting in a comfortably-quirky, yet understatedly classy context. The trio is musical, flexible, and dynamic, as is each individual member. Please enjoy Carol Cleveland Sings’ On the Hill Session!
So… When/why/how/where did Carol Cleveland Sings get started? That is to say, can you give us a comfortably-abridged bio?
Thomas: Carol Cleveland Sings started as a moniker for all of my solo bedroom recordings. The project began in late high school and has continued, under-the-radar until now. I treated the songs as demos for my other band, The Spinto Band but usually there’d be 4 or 5 that would become Spinto Band songs and then another 20 leftover that would remain “Carol Cleveland Sings” and be released on a burnt CD-r for my friends. During a lull in Spinto Band activity I thought I’d take a stab at doing more than just demos for this project. At the same time I had just started performing with Gretchen and thought she would make a great contributor to the project and she did!
Why did you choose these songs for On the Hill?
Thomas: I thought the three selections were a good representation of the spectrum of our music right now. Unabashed pop, Dreamy psychedelia, and melancholy waltzes.
What else is going on in your world? What’s next?
Gretchen: We have a full-length album recorded and a few other music videos in the works! We’re performing at Philadelphia’s Art Star Craft Bazaar on May 7th [past]. We’re also working on booking more shows
Where can we see and hear more of you?
Thomas: We’re still working on that! Looking forward to play more shows outside of Philadelphia but in the meantime you can listen to our latest (free) EP on bandcamp which has our last two singles and covers of songs by the likes of Sparks and Van Dyke Parks. https://carolclevelandsings.bandcamp.com/album/wishing-well-ep
